Interactive Orals – What are they?

The Interactive oral (IO) is an exciting and unique assessment approach with an emerging community of practitioners in DCU. As per the DCU website, an IO Assessment is an “efficient and effective form of authentic assessment that promotes skill development and employability, enhances overall student engagement and a personalised approach to learning and teaching, and preserves academic integrity”. An IO is innovative in that it is a two-way conversation using a work-based or professional scenario to stimulate a free-flowing discussion. It facilitates the exploration of a student’s deep and higher-order understanding of a topic.

Interactive Oral Assessment for PSY1061

For this module, the IO conversation will be 10-12 minutes long, will take place in real-time either in-person or by zoom (TBC; scheduled for week 7). The module coordinator and tutor/demonstrator will be the co-hosts of a student podcast focusing on an accessible approach to big questions and emerging trends in psychology (see similar podcasts like Speaking of Psychology) and the student will be the invited “expert” who is being interviewed. The conversation will be recorded for assessment and moderation, and deleted following the external examiner review in August.

The assessment itself will be an interactive conversation where the student will submit a 500-word (maximum) topic description/interpretation in advance (worth 10% of overall marks) where they clearly and succinctly indicate: 1) their role/background as an expert in the field of psychology, and 2) provide their “slant” on the key topic area synthesising evidence (and relevant theory as appropriate) from across disciplines in psychology. Students are invited to focus on one of the following topics as an associated academic “expert” in this area:

  • What does psychology say about gender and gender differences?
  • How is research done in psychology?
  • What does psychology say about consciousness?

The podcast interview will ask them to briefly introduce their background and position it in relation to the field of psychology. Prompts will be used to scaffold and support the interview conversation, based on the following key learning outcomes and in line with the associated rubric (attached below):

  • Understand and describe the theoretical, conceptual, research and methodological advances, at, or informed by, the forefront of psychological enquiry.
  • Demonstrate a critical awareness of current problems and new insights at the forefront of psychological enquiry today

Skill #1 – Professional awareness and identity. The student is able to demonstrate a coherent account of their role/background and their slant on key topic area reflects this role/background   7-10 marks

The insights from psychology presented were well-organised, concise and professionally appropriate to the chosen role/background. The student presents a detailed, coherent and convincing “back story” relating to their chosen profession.

6-6.5 marks

The insights from psychology presented were quite well organised, concise and professionally appropriate but may have some minor errors, inaccuracies or omissions reflecting the role/background. The student presents a coherent “back story” relating to their chosen profession.

5-5.5 marks

The insights from psychology presented were generally organised but not always concise and/or consistently professionally appropriate. The student presents a “back story” relating to their chosen profession but this may have omissions, inaccuracies or be incomplete in some way.

4-4.5 marks

The insights from psychology presented were somewhat organised but not concise and/or professionally appropriate. The student presents a “back story” relating to their chosen profession but this is somewhat incoherent and with major omissions or inaccuracies.

<4 marks

The insights from psychology presented were disorganised, not concise and lacking in professional appropriateness. The student presents no clear back story, it has extremely limited detail, or it is incoherent.

Skill #2 Demonstrates an ability to apply relevant theory, concepts and research in area of psychology chosen   21-30 marks

The response is highly coherent and convincing account, engaging closely and systematically with the subject, with consistently strong evidence of a comprehensive mastery of relevant theory, concepts and research in the area of psychology chosen

18-20.5 marks

The response reflects the skill well, demonstrating a strong grasp of the relevant theory, concepts and research in the area of psychology chosen. There are no major errors or omissions but the structure, weight or coherence may be lacking in parts.

15-17.5 marks

The response reflects the skill, providing an intellectually competent answer (i.e. factually sound) with evidence of a reasonable familiarity with the relevant literature, theory and/or research in area of psychology chosen. However, the response contains some inaccuracies and/or omissions relating to important ideas in this area.

12-14.5 marks

The response superficially reflects the skill, providing an adequate answer but with limited evidence of familiarity with the relevant literature, theory and/or research in area of psychology chosen. There are major errors or omissions.

<12 marks

The response did not sufficiently reflect the skill. Evidence, concepts and/or theory was referred to incorrectly/poorly or was absent

Skill #3 Critical Evaluation, Interdisciplinary focus and Synthesis. Demonstrates critical awareness of theory and research in psychology and an ability to construct arguments that bring ideas and issues across different areas of psychology   21-30 marks

Clearly communicates and synthesises correct information from a wide variety of evaluated sources across psychology, using supporting evidence. Articulates a position with clear alignment with theory and research consistent with their chosen area and disagreement with, or appropriate comment on other research/practice areas in psychology. Clearly demonstrates ability to construct arguments and expand on points relating to their position.

18-20.5 marks

Clearly communicates and synthesises correct information from multiple sources across psychology, using supporting evidence. Articulates a position with some alignment with theory and research consistent with their chosen area and disagreement with, or appropriate comment on other research/practice areas in psychology. Demonstrates ability to construct arguments and expand on points relating to their position but may make some minor errors or omissions relating to this.

15-17.5 marks

Communicates and synthesises mostly correct information from a few sources in a fragmented way. Articulates a position with some reference to theory and research consistent with their chosen area. May not have considered disagreement with, or appropriate comment on other research/practice areas in psychology. Demonstrates some ability to construct arguments and consider their position but with errors or omissions relating to their position and other areas in psychology.

12-14.5 marks

Communicates some incorrect information from sources in a fragmented way. Articulates a position consistent with their chosen area. Limited or very little consideration of other research/practice areas in psychology. Demonstrates some ability to consider their position but with major omissions relating to their position and other areas in psychology.

<12 marks

Communicates mostly information that is incorrect or from unreliable sources. Articulates a position that is not consistent with their chosen area or is incoherent in some key ways. Little or no consideration of other research/practice areas in psychology. Demonstrates poor ability to consider their position with major omissions relating to their position and other areas in psychology.

Skill #4 Communication skills; Logical coherence and responsiveness to prompts   14-20 marks

Consistently clarifies, restates and responds to prompts; summarises when needed and interacts excellently with the marker clearly within the context of the scenario. The student has carefully considered the language used and ensured that it is consistent with their profession and that the vocabulary is appropriate to the intended audience. The student demonstrates an excellent ability to answer questions relating to their chosen profession and research/practice in this area in a coherent and consistent manner.

12-13.5 marks

Generally responds well to marker comments, prompts and needs; interacts with the marker clearly within the context of the scenario. The student has considered the language used and it is generally consistent with their profession but the vocabulary may not always be appropriate to the intended audience. The student demonstrates a very good ability to answer questions relating to their chosen profession and research/practice in this area but the responses may have some inconsistencies or inaccuracies.

10-11.5 marks

Somewhat responsive to marker comments, prompts and needs; misses some opportunities for interaction with the marker within the context of the scenario. The student has considered the language used and it is generally consistent with their profession but the vocabulary is not appropriate to the intended audience. The student is able to answer questions relating to their chosen profession but the responses contain inconsistencies, omissions or inaccuracies.

8-9.5 marks

Responds inconsistently to marker comments, prompts and needs; does not interact well with the marker within the context of the scenario. The student has minimally considered the language used in relation to their profession and the vocabulary is not appropriate to the intended audience. The student is broadly able to answer questions relating to their chosen profession but the responses contain many inconsistencies, omissions or inaccuracies.

<8 marks

Responds to prompts inadequately and/or fails to interact with the marker within the context of the scenario. The student has not considered the language used in relation to their profession and the vocabulary is not appropriate to the intended audience. The student cannot answer questions relating to their chosen profession or the responses are incoherent, and contain major inconsistencies, omissions or inaccuracies.
