Introduction

Digital transformation is now a necessity in today’s business world. Organisations leverage technologies like cloud computing, artificial intelligence, automation, IoT, and big data to manage operations, enhance customer experience, and innovate products and services.

Assignment Requirements

You are required to:

Review the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Identify a business or societal challenge that can be resolved using IoT technology, categorised as:

  • Excellent: Not yet resolved.
  • Good: Can be improved.
  • Moderate: Already addressed.

Propose an IoT-based solution for commercial, economic, or social benefit while considering potential challenges.

Design and implement an IoT application addressing the selected problem.

Evaluate security, privacy, and trust issues related to IoT technologies and propose mitigation strategies.

PSB602IT Learning Outcomes

Completion of this assignment will address the following learning outcomes:

  • Design and implement an IoT application to meet a defined goal.

  • Review trends in IoT technologies, protocols, and future developments.

PSB602IT Task: Report & Prototype

Report (2000 words)

Prepare a proposal report detailing an IoT-based prototype for a business, society, or industry. The report should include:

  • Introduction (200-500 words)
  • Overview of the project and report structure.
  • Background Study / Literature Review
  • Select an industry (e.g., healthcare, transportation, finance, agriculture).
  • Analyse 5 real-world case studies identifying current challenges.
  • Define key problems that IoT can solve.
  • Propose an IoT-based solution and its rationale.
  • Compare IoT components, software, and hardware.
  • Prototype Design & Architecture
  • Conceptual model and working principles.
  • Enabling technologies with a layered architecture diagram.
  • Wireframe or UI design (if applicable).
  • Prototype Implementation
  • Step-by-step development process with screenshots.
  • Focus on original development (e.g., new code).
  • Prototype Evaluation
  • Define test scenarios and measurement metrics.
  • Present evaluation results and findings.
  • Conclusion
  • Re-emphasise problems and solutions.
  • Highlight challenges, constraints, and future improvements.
  • References (Harvard Referencing Style)
  • Appendix (if applicable, e.g., cloud platform API links, analytics dashboards)

Prototype Development

  • The prototype should be designed based on the IoT solution.
  • The prototype does not need to be fully functional, but must demonstrate the concept.
  • Evaluate security, privacy, and trust concerns with mitigation strategies.

Viva (8 minutes including Q&A)

Students will be required to present their prototype and answer questions.

Report Format Guidelines

Ensure your report follows these formatting guidelines:

  • Font: Arial
  • Line Spacing: 1.25
  • Alignment: Justified
  • Headings:
  • 14pt bold for Section Headings
  • 12pt bold for Sub-headings
  • 10pt bold for Level 3 headings
  • 10pt for body text
  • Figures & Tables: Must include numbered captions and be referenced in-text.
  • Referencing: Harvard Referencing Style
  • Turnitin Similarity Index: Below 25% (penalty for bypassing similarity check).

Submission Guidelines

  • Submit via Blackboard before the deadline.
  •  File format: Word document (StudentName-Assignment.docx).
  • Include:
  • Title Page (Module Name, Assessment Title, Word Count).
  • Assignment Questions.
  • Assignment Answers, clearly labeled by Task Number.
  • Late Submission Policy:
  • Extensions (up to 5 working days) must be approved by the module lecturer.
  • Deferrals (more than 5 working days) require official documentation.
  • 5% penalty per day for late submissions.

  • Collusion or similarity with other students’ work will be penalised.
