The module’s aim is to provide a framework for critical awareness of the concepts and principles of operations management through the business process cycle. It is designed to critically evaluate models, frameworks and techniques to support decision making and enable the critical evaluation of evident business problems so that learning can be adapted and applied to create sustainable business solutions.
The purpose of the assignment is to assess the student’s ability to understand the processes, practices and theories of management of operations and processes within organizations. It will encourage students to engage critically with key ideas within these fields and apply them to relevant business contexts to develop their understanding.
2.1 Individual Presentation (AS1), weighting 30% of the mark (LO2) 10 minutes.
Using any organisation of your choice, develop a 10-minute presentation that critically appraise and evaluate strategic operation problems using an appropriate theoretical framework.
2.1 Written assessment (AS2), weighting 70% of the mark (LO1, LO3) 2000 words.
The online food delivery using mobile phone apps is a crucial part of modern life. The low costs of delivering food in a hot/cold state depends on slick operations.
Using at least two of the various Operations Management theories you have learnt in this module, assess the operations management of either UberEats or Foodhub with a view to improving their current operational performance.
You are required to assess the existing practice within the selected organisation, compare it with the best practice in that industry. From this identify and explain areas of improvement that you would make.
A suggested structure for your report:
Part 1: Introduction: (Approx. 250 words)
1. This will include the brief introduction of the organisation, it’s vision and mission, its key operational activities, products and services, and its key supply chain components (tiers of customers and suppliers) of the organisation.
2. Explain the purpose of the report and outline the structure of the report.
3. Define any key terms, concepts that might be useful for the report.
4. Be engaging and professional.
Part 2: Main Discussion: (Approx. 1500 words). Keep the subheadings informative and specific to the theories used in this section.
Section 1: Outline the chosen theories (or concepts) that you have selected for the assessment. You should not describe the theories here but briefly explain how these theories or concepts are implemented in the chosen organisation. It should be reflected through the product and services including design and delivery, quality standards, supply chain, inventory management, any other
associated operations process that is linked to the organisation. You should aim at only including description that you will rely on to substantiate your analysis.
Section 2: Analysis of the organisation using the key theories, show the extend that the organisation is demonstrating good practices compared to the industry and indicate if there is room for improvement and/or change the existing operations of the organisation.
Section 3: Explain your findings if your analysis suggests that there is room for improvement and/or change the existing operations of the organisation.
Part 3: Conclusion: (Approx.250 words)
1. Briefly refer back to your task
2. Summarise the key issues raised in sections 1 - 3 the main discussion.

Word Limit: The assessment should be limited to 2000 words. If you end up with more than 2000 words, then you must revise the text judiciously to deliver work within the stated limits.

Your written assignment must be Microsoft Word processed and presented in a report format with simple sub-headings. The word count should be as specified in the assignment above±10% (tables, diagrams and appendices are excluded from the count).
The Assignment report should have a Front Sheet showing your name, your student number, the module name, the module number, the assignment title, the module tutor's name, the date and the word count.
All assignments will be submitted, graded and fed-back electronically via TURNITIN. Several submissions will be permitted before the hand-in date in order to enable you to refine the content in your report.
To submit your work, please go to the ‘Submit your work’ area of the Module Moodle site. It is important that you submit your work to the correct module Moodle site, and that your work is submitted on time.
Feedback on assignments in general will be provided to the whole group when marked assignments are returned. Feedback on assignments for everyone will be provided electronically via TURNITIN.
