NU643 Purpose of the Teaching Portfolio

The purpose of the teaching portfolio is to demonstrate the range of your teaching competence. You are expected to provide evidence of your developing teaching skills. You should aim to demonstrate the process of teaching, what you did, why, evidence to support your approach, etc. Please be selective about what you present in your e-portfolio.

The structure and format of the teaching portfolio should follow the guidelines included here, and be divided into four sections as follows:

Guidelines on Presentation of Teaching Portfolio Assignment

Section 1: Personal Teaching Philosophy (1000 words)

This is a statement of your teaching philosophy. This sets the scene and outlines your views and inspirations for teaching and learning and is required to be supported by evidence-based literature. Examples of what this section might address include your beliefs about students, how they learn, how you, as a teacher, aim to support their learning, the teaching strategies that you value, and why. You should also include a reference to how your philosophy influenced your teaching practice and if it altered or developed as you became more experienced and confident.

Section 2: Best Practice in Teaching Methodologies (1000 words)

Your discussion and analysis of ‘best practice’ in relation to teaching methodologies (i.e., lecturing, small group teaching, etc.) should draw on and include reference to evidence-based literature. Please include in the relevant sections:

  • Best Practice in Large Group Teaching (250 words)
  • Best Practice in Small Group Teaching (250 words)
  • Best Practice in Clinical Practice/Skills Teaching (250 words)
  • Innovative Teaching Practice (250 words)

Section 3: Reflective Accounts of Teaching Practice (1000 words)

You are required to undertake an in-depth reflective analysis of your overall performance at frequent intervals throughout your programme. This should include a comparison of your performance with the guidelines or performance criteria you identified and an action plan or goals for developing your competence as you develop as a teacher.

Please include:

  • Three reflective accounts of your teaching practice (250 words each)
  • One overall
