PAD 804 Assignment Brief:
Critically examine the historical, philosophical, and practical dimensions of Project Management, particularly within Public Administration.
You are expected to:
- Compare Western and African perspectives on Project Management’s history and philosophy
- Analyse contemporary methodologies and lifecycles
- Demonstrate an understanding of both the PMBOK® Guide 2017 (6th Edition) ProjectManagement Knowledge Areas and the PMBOK® Guide 2021 (7th Edition) Performance Domainsand Principles.
Instructions:
Write an academic paper of 3,500 – 4,500 words that addresses the following tasks:
Part A: The Historical and Philosophical Evolution of Project Management (30%)
- Discuss the historical development of Project Management from a Western perspective,highlighting key milestones, thinkers, and industrial roots.
- Critically examine African practices on Project Management,drawing from indigenous knowledge systems, communal approaches to resource and time management, and traditional leadership practices.
- Reflect on how these worldviews (Western vs. African) influence values, leadership styles,stakeholder engagement, and time/resource conceptualisation in public projects.
Part B: Project Management Methodologies and Lifecycles in Practice (30%)
- Explain the differences between the Classic Predictive (Waterfall), Adaptive, and HybridProject Management Methodologies. Provide examples relevant to the project that your groupidentified during the 5-day class.
- Compare the Linear (Waterfall), Iterative, Incremental, and Agile Project Lifecycles. Discussand motivate why the selected lifecycle was chosen
Part C: PMBOK® Guide 6th Edition – Knowledge Areas (30%)
- Consider Risk and Scope Management as part of the 10 Knowledge Areas of PMBOK® 6thEdition (2017)
- Present the material, efficient or moving, formal and final ‘because’ as separate tables of these teleological elements for both Risk and Scope Management
- Explain the process of hylomorphism (matter into form)
- Critically analyse the final ‘because’ of both Risk and Scope Management and present the outcomes of these two Project Management Knowledge Areas
Part D: PMBOK® Guide 7th Edition – Performance Domains and Principles (10%)
