MEC445 Aim

The aim of these projects is to produce an advanced finite element model using ANSYS of an industry-relevant application, to compare results with experimental measurements and to discuss how this model could be used to solve an industrialproblem.

Projects are the same as in the Autumn semester and details can be found on Blackboard in the same folder as in the Autumn semester.

You are asked to work on the same project you were working on in the Autumn semester and achieve a minimum result of 60% to pass the resit examination. Please note that if you pass, your result will be capped at 50%.

MEC445 Assessment

Each student will produce an individual report. The report, apart from having the conventional title page, summary, introduction, discussion, conclusions, references etc., should include:

  1. Description of the analysis approach adopted;
  2. Explanation of the model construction;
  3. Details of solution methods and related parameters used;
  4. Comparison between model and experimental results;
  5. Interpretation of results and comments on any discrepancies;
  6. Discussion about how to make use of the model to solve the industrial problem.

MEC445 Format:

The report is limited to 3000 words (word count must be included on the cover sheet) and 20 pages excluding coversheet, summary, contents and references.

No appendix is allowed for this report.

Marks breakdown:

Analysis approach and model construction including solution methods and parameters used (30%), modelling results, verification and validation (30%), assessment, interpretation and discussion of results (30%), report quality and writing style (10%).

Deadline

- Reports must be submitted through Turnitin by Thursday 2 October by 11:59am (UK time). The Turnitin link “MEC445 Resit Assignment” can be found in the folder “Turnitin submission links” under “Assessment”. The School policy on late submission will be applied (5% penalty per day late up to 5 working days, after which a zero will be returned).
