Assessment Details

Portfolio requirements/ Assessment Criteria and Weightings

The work placement module is assessed as follows:

Students are required to keep an internship log that records details about the nature of tasks/activities undertaken, the student's contribution to the tasks, behaviours and skills utilised, what the student learned or gained from the task/activity and how theoretical ideas studied in the course relate to the work environment experience. A log can be kept in Word or Excel format, and can be kept every week. Academic meetings with the student will be 30-60 minutes long and will be held at least twice throughout the internship term. It is the student's responsibility to reach out to the module leader.

The Placement Portfolio should contain the following parts:

1. An overview of the nature of the work placement organisation and the work the student was involved in (10%)

2a) An analytical reflection on the work placement experience. Students are required to choose and reflect on relevant and appropriate examples from their weekly logs to demonstrate self-awareness and self-evaluation of what happened. This should include:

• Ways in which the student contributed to the goals of the organisation. (10%)
• What challenges did the student face (10%)
• How the student resolved them (10%)
• How academic theory applies to the work environment. (10%)

2b) A critical evaluation of the student's personal learning from the placement. Students are required to

• identify and evaluate what they have learnt from completing the placement (20%)
• include discussion about skills and insights they have developed and/or enhanced through the work placement (subject-specific and transferable) and how this relates to the student's future personal, career and academic goals. (30%)

3) Internship log attached as an appendix.

4) Supervisor's feedback and confirmation of completion of the internship (if shared with the student by the employer).

Please note that a portfolio will not be accepted for marking unless ALL the above components are included.

In case a student has opted for a professional training course instead (see Module Handbook for details), they would need to adapt the above assignment to reflect their work in the training course(s). 
Section (1) would include a short overview of the course(s) attended. 
Section (2) should be adapted to reflect the analytical reflection / critical evaluation relevant to the courses attended.
Section (3) would not be applicable
Section (4) would be replaced by evidence of completing the course(s) attended.
