Academic Year | 2025-26 |
You will assemble a Case File Portfolio (CFP) documenting your work upon an exemplar clinic file, using ePortfolio/Pebblepad, which will address the following five competencies:
In so doing, you will demonstrate an ability to:-
These skills are essential to legal practice and are expected of professionals working in a law firm. Further, the skills you will demonstrate have broad application across a wider range of endeavours beyond legal practice.
You will be shown how to set up, format and maintain your ePortfolio/Pebblepad during seminars and workshops, complemented by written instructions for reference.
We recommend that you have one page for each competency within your portfolio. You aim to produce finished articles in each competency, along with a reflective document that demonstrates how you evaluate your own progress.
An interview recording has been provided as stimulus material. You do not need to move/upload the video file to ePortfolio/Pebblepad.
You are not permitted to use Generative Artificial Intelligence in performing this assessment.
The words you use must be your own, and the research you conduct must be properly interpreted to demonstrate understanding with correct OSCOLA referencing to show adherence to academic conventions.
You must successfully achieve the following Learning Outcomes to pass this assessment:
6.1 Critically evaluate and apply fundamental concepts, principles and values of the law of England & Wales to develop lines of arguments, make sound judgments and solve problems, taking account of the circumstances of a particular case where relevant.
6.2 Critically evaluate public and private legal theories, processes, institutions and ethics, taking account of their wider political, social, environmental and economic contexts and the extent to which they can be considered fair and just.
6.3 Present information clearly and succinctly, synthesising complex legal materials using correct legal terminology, and conforming to appropriate conventions and standards, where required, and requirements as to citation and referencing.
6.4 Undertake independent research using the most appropriate sources and methods, drawing on a wide range of appropriate primary and secondary materials.
6.5 Critically evaluate competing arguments, lacunas, ambiguities and contradictions in specific areas of law, accounting for uncertainty or suggesting ideas for reform.
6.6 Critically reflect on their personal development, demonstrating an awareness of how their professional identity and values are being shaped by the ethical, social, political, environmental and economic impact of the law and legal processes
Written guidance on setting up your ePortfolio/Pebblepad will be provided in the assessment 1 workbook, and assistance offered during your early seminars and assessment workshop.
You should use this to present your work and to demonstrate your reflective learning. We recommend that you keep a reflective journal as you perform each task, as you may otherwise forget important facts, feelings or emotions which would enable you to reflect on and document your development at the end.
How should I structure my CFP, and what should go in it?
You should create five different pages on your ePortfolio; one for each of the competencies on which you will be assessed:
Your work will be marked according to the assessment instructions provided within this document and the selected ‘Programme-level Learning Outcomes’ (PLOs) (see above).
This assessment is marked using the law clinic-specific rubric below. You should also review the Marking Guide on Moodle to understand how clinic assessments are marked. This will also be addressed in workshops.
This rubric sets out the aspects of your work that we are assessing to arrive at the overall grade that will be awarded. Markers will select the level that best describes the standard of each aspect of your work and make this clear to you in their feedback.
You must meet the baseline standard (40 – 49%) to demonstrate that you have met the Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs) and pass this assessment. To progress beyond that standard, study the rubric to see what markers are looking for in the higher grade boundaries to scaffold and build your learning to achieve your fullest potential.
Pass Grade Bands (100 – 40) (Programme Learning Outcomes must be met)
Fail Grade Bands (39 – 0) (Programme Learning Outcomes are not met)
