This course introduces ākonga to cultural practice in Aotearoa New Zealand, exploring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and cultural safety and the impact this has on paramedic practice. Ākonga will reflect on their lived experience and the influence this has on their cultural views.
Ākonga will explore the importance of cultural safety in supporting professional paramedic practice within a variety of settings.
Following successful completion of this course, ākonga will be able to:
Readings that are essential to ākonga learning in this course will be made available in your programme’s Moodle site or alternatively on Closed Reserve in the Library. Your tutor will give you more details. It is expected that ākonga will independently access a wide variety of relevant literature.
In this assessment, ākonga will explore Te Tiriti o Waitangi as it relates to cultural safety in practice, health care, and paramedic practice in Aotearoa New Zealand. This assignment will focus on disparities in health outcomes for Māori versus non-Māori, social determinants influence on health outcomes and the influence of te Tiriti on healthcare in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Write an assignment on the following:
1. a) Describe how colonisation led to disparities in health outcomes for Māori versus non-Māori and how this impacted the social determinants of health.
b) Choose ONE social determinant from the list below. Discuss how the chosen social determinant relates to health outcomes in Aotearoa New Zealand:

The purpose of this assessment is to provide the opportunity to ākonga to examine their own culture and life experience, and how these impact on their work and interactions with others for culturally safe practice.
Develop and record a 10-minute presentation that is supported by an electronic poster or slideshow-type presentation that includes the following:
1. Description of culture and cultural safety in practice
2. Reflection on your own culture and life experiences: and how your positionality and biases may impact on your interactions with tangata whai ora/patients and their whānau/families.
For this to be presented in a safe way the video presentation will be viewed only by tutors involved in marking or moderating the presentation.
The written component should conform to APA (7th edition) format and should include a reference list with at least six references to support your work.
