Academic Year | 2025 |
In this assignment, you are required to produce technical engineering drawings in SolidWorks. Drawings are based on supplied SolidWorks part files rather than creating your own 3D models. You will only be assessed on your submitted drawings; however, the supplied 3D part files require some modification to meet all assessment instructions.
Drawings should follow all appropriate engineering conventions. Please refer to the lecture slides, Drawing Basics Handbook, textbook and Standards as needed. Ensure you check through all instructions, the Handbook and the rubric before submitting your work. Not following instructions and conventions will significantly impact your mark per the rubric criteria.
You are strongly encouraged to begin working on this assessment well in advance of the deadline so that you may ask questions and get support from facilitators during the workshop sessions. There is also a peer-review gateway where you will receive feedback prior to submitting your work again. This is a peer-review gateway, and your mark is dependent on your providing timely feedback to your peers. More information on the gateway is provided in LMS.
In this assignment, you are required to produce two sets of drawings for (1) a safety valve assembly and (2) a shaft-pulley assembly. You are provided with the SolidWorks part files on LMS. Make sure you unzip the files before loading them into SolidWorks. You will need to save the files to OneDrive to access them on UniApps (the web browser is faster for this than file explorer). Note: You may need to modify the SolidWorks Part files to achieve the stated requirements.
It is up to you to work out how best to represent the supplied parts in technical engineering drawings, i.e. where to place dimensions, which views to use, etc. The focus should be on drawings that enable the parts to be manufactured and follow Australian Standard drawing conventions.
You must ensure that the tolerances, surface finish, material, etc., make sense for the context of the parts. We do not expect you to be manufacturing experts, but you must give these aspects some thought. Hint: look at the material that has been specified for the parts in the 3D SolidWorks model.
You must use SolidWorks 2024 through UniApps. Save and back up your work often, as SolidWorks crashes are not uncommon. Technical issues are not typically grounds for EVA, so do not leave your work until the last minute. Speak to UWA IT should you have any UniApps issues.
All drawings must have a title block and follow correct Australian Standard conventions.
All assembly and exploded view drawings must have an appropriate parts list.
All drawings must be A3.
All specific tolerances required from the instructions must be stated with their explicit numerical value, e.g. "+0.120 / +0.600", not"fit class C11". This will require you to know how to use the fit tables.
Safety valve assembly
You must produce:
1. Assembly drawing with one full outline view and one section view. Be sure to include a parts list.
2. An exploded view drawing with a parts list.
3. Fully dimensioned and detailed part drawings of all components in the assembly (as necessary, do not provide drawings for the spring, bolts, nuts or washers).
The assembly should include:
I. M10 bolts, washers and nuts attaching the valve body and bottom blank. These are not provided; you will need to add them via the SolidWorks Toolbox.
II. Specific tolerances on the valve seat and the location it sits in the valve body -H7/h6
III. Specific tolerances on valve and cap to avoid interference.
IV. External thread on the cap to mate with the valve body. Minimum thread length 15 mm
