EGB101 Task Description 

In this first assessment task, each person will conduct research on the community and potential users of the project and present this to the client via written report. 

The scoping study will need to: 

  • Unpack the project context to determine what the project involves 
  • Understand the location, the need, local context, and community you are designing for 
  • Comment on how your design meets your given project context, including key elements of sustainability 
  • Identify 4 potential users of your project initiative and identify any special design requirements these users may require.

Findings from this initial scoping study will support your teams preliminary and final design for Assessment 3.

EGB101 Learning Outcomes Measured 

This task directly related to learning outcomes 2 and 3 of EGB101 - Critically reflect on engineering design process and professional practice, project management, cultural diversity and ethics with regard to professional engineering practice at an introduced level. Collaborate in a team to create and deliver engineering outcomes and to communicate those outcomes to engineers and other stakeholders at an introduced level.

EGB101 Further Task Details 

Unpack  the  initial  project  context  and  determine  the  important  challenges,  opportunities  and considerations when working to plan and design for your chosen project initiative for the greater Brisbane area.  Individually,  you  will  conduct  research,  analyse  the  community,  and  report  their  findings  via  a preliminary scoping study. During your research you will investigate: 

  • The location (e.g. geography, demographics, land use) Additionally, you should investigate at least 2 of following points: 
  • Social  factors  (e.g.  social  norms,  behaviours,  how  the  community  functions,  first  nations considerations) 
  • Community engagement (how to engage and consult and who is involved) 
  • Economic factors (how much could this potentially cost, what are the potential benefits, who would be impacted and how) 
  • Environmental impacts (e.g., existing situation, seasonal factors, pollution) 
  • Technical (e.g. accessibility, impacts/links to existing infrastructure/services)

What you need to do (scoping study): 

Remember all points must be considered within your group project, you may find it beneficial to ensure all aspects are researched during this assessment within your group.

Based on your research, you must comment on how your proposed design will satisfy your given project context, including the key elements that make your design sustainable. Identify 4 potential users and any special design requirements.

Write up your research and analysis in the form of an individual report (template supplied) Your report will need to inform the client of the current situation and the identified challenges/opportunities when considering this project. 

You will need to convince the client that you understand the project, including location specifics and the communities you are designing for, and your analysis of any potential challenges/opportunities.

Submit your Scoping Study as an individual 1500 – 2000- word written report to your client, Brisbane City Council. 

Include the following sections in your report:

  • Introduction:  Identify  the  client,  the  location  you  have  chosen,  and  important challenges/opportunities of your project initiative unpacked from the project context page on Canvas
  • Background Research: Present the findings of your research and analysis on your given community (include potential technical, social, economic, and environmental issues associated with the project, where relevant). Make sure you inform the reader of the current situation in relation to your project, what are the community needs, and how did this project come about. 
  • Potential  Users  and  System  Components:  Conduct  a  user  analysis  for  your chosen community and identify four specific users from this analysis. Discuss key components within the design based upon these users’ needs.
  • Appendix: Charts, maps, diagrams, or additional calculations may be submitted as part of the appendix.

Formatting requirements for report: 

  • Do not write an essay; follow the template.
  • Diagrams/figures and tables, cover page, and references are not included in the word count but should be included in the report. 
  • Relevant figures and tables must be included in the main body of the report 
  • If you go over the word limit, only the stipulated length of the report will be read by your marker. There is 10% leeway. 
  • Use the headings given in the template as the guide to section headings for your report. 
  • Formatting Settings: 11pt Calibri, Single column, 2.5 cm margins on all four sides with 1.5 line spacing

Referencing and research requirements 

  • The referencing style should be APA style. Refer to Library Cite/write website for guidance 
  • List your references in alphabetical order, according to APA referencing requirements 
  • Wikipedia is not an appropriate technical reference. However, it can be used as a resource to identify more appropriate academic resources.
