Students will assign themselves to groups (max 4 min of 2 students per group) and asked to interview other students ( outside their group min 8 max 10 interviews ) to explore how students define their own career success, the qualities /abilities that they believe are linked to this career success including their studies, and which informs their career orientation and the personal strategies they may use to achieve career success.
They will also be expected to design a set of interview questions to help them explore the issue of career success and to undertake interviews. The exercise will require that students are familiar with the previous theoretical research on career success and careers. They will be expected to analyse the interview material using theories covered in the module’s weeks 1-5.
Specifically, these interviews will form the basis of a group-based dataset that all the students in the group can then use individually in conjunction with the theory to explain how students understand their own careers and define success.
There is a reflective element to report where the student writing it can then use the findings to analyse how they perceive their self as a student, how they personally perceive career success. In the reflection they can use the suggested career theorising compare and contrast their values and attitudes with that of the findings to show insight into the relevance of career theorising around careers and career success.
The tutor will organise workshop sessions in seminars to facilitate the group work underpinning the development of the interview questions and interviewing – it is compulsory that all students attend these. These workshops will form part of the formative assessment for the task and as such students should use the feedback from the tutor and peers to help in their summative assessment.
