Assessment Title | Construction Productivity Investigation |
Academic Year | 2025 |
Deadline | before 5:00 PM on 25th July 2025 |
This submission is valued at thirty per cent (30%) of your total mark for this course.
Productivity is defined as output/ unit of time. E.g. concrete placement in m3 / hr; steel fixing manhours/ tonne, etc. For your assignment task, you are required to select a construction activity used in Civil Engineering and explain the reasons for the improvement of productivity of that task over the recent years.
You have the freedom to review a construction activity that was once a labour-intensive task and now has a complete change of productivity because of mechanisation, or you can look at an existing labour task and discuss how the productivity of a labour-intensive task has changed over time.
Your written work is to be presented in Report format, and the word length is nominated at 3000 words. Your writing is to be referenced according to the Harvard standard (using at least 10 reference sources), and your Cover Page, Table of Contents, References and any appendices you use will not be included in the word count.
The compilation of this Report and its submission is a substantial piece of work and as such, will enable the student to prepare a document that will benefit them personally, enabling them to demonstrate their Report Writing skill and ability. This submission will be a self-contained Engineering Report, having the following elements:
1.Cover Sheet(This allows the student to individually 'title' their work).
2.Executive Summary(1-page maximum and is written after the main report is completed).
3.Table of Contents(which includes page referencing).
4. Introduction
5. The 'main body' writings
6. Conclusion
7. Recommendations
8. References
9.One (or more) Appendix(s)you have included.
For your information, the Introduction and Conclusions should be about 10% each in the length of your writing, with the 'mainbody' text being about 80% of the content. For this submission, your Introduction, 'main body' writings, Conclusion, Recommendations, and Executive Summary are not to exceed 3000 words. Additional other pages required (as listed above) are to be included, but are not part of the page count. Whilst there is no page limit specified for an appendix length, consider what you include in your preparation! (Do not make the marker read superfluous information!) This will require you to carefully consider what is to be included in the writings and what needs to be included as an appendix.
If you choose to place pictures, diagrams/ schematics, drawings, etc., into the 'mainbody' writing, ensure that they do not occupy more than one-third of a page, they are titled, and are referenced in your writings. Likewise, for what you include in an appendix(s); this needs to be linked into your report writings.
This Assessment Task has referencing requirements using the Harvard system. If you are not good at this, make the appropriate enquiries to learn this system of referencing. [Start at the Library (enquire about the Harvard Referencing system).]
The smallest font you should be using is 12-point for the text writing. 'Times New Roman' font is normal for this type of report writing, using 1.15 line spacing. Headings are to be in 14 or 16 point. Use bolding or italics appropriately. Use margin sizing of 25 mm. (N.B. This outline has been written to this format, except for the margins.)
The submission is to be uploaded as a single file into the Individual Assignment submission portal on the course Moodle before 5:00 PM 25th July 2025. Ensure that you plan your work to meet this deadline, as late submissions will incur penalty deductions under the details listed in the Course Profile.
You will upload your Assignment into the Moodle submission portal created for this assignment. It will be open from Week 7. Your work will be submitted through the 'Turn- it-in' reporting system as a check on your work and the associated plagiarism issues.
N.B.Advice for you is to avoid trying to upload your work in the last minutes before the due deadline. Plan your submissions better than this to avoid the technology-associated failures that are all too often prevalent and unannounced! This particularly applies to you if you are using mobile technologies!
