With rising water demand due to increasing population, and climate change; there willbe difficulty in meeting the future demand for both potable water and non-potable water. This would also have a significant impact on future economic growth in GreaterMetropolitan Melbourne.
Diversity of water sources is needed to ensure that we are prepared for future droughts and increasing population. Water recycling has a substantive and important contribution in securing future water supplies and in improving the health of the nation’s waterways. It adopts the concept of using water that is 'fit for purpose', whereby the quality of water is appropriate for the intended use.
Using recycled water that is ‘fit for purpose’ means it can be safely used for purposes suchas irrigation of public open space, toilet flushing and laundry. Thus, high quality drinking water is conserved for drinking and other personal uses.
The three water authorities in Greater Melbourne; Southeast Water, Yarra ValleyWater and Greater Western Water contribute to the Victorian Government’s waterrecycling and drinking water substitution targets. In your project your group will investigate different options to improve the sustainability of supplying both mains and recycled water to customers within the service areas of Southeast Water such as Officer, Officer South and Clyde North.
Your group must develop a conceptual pipeline design to supply potable and non-potable water to your assigned area. Your group is to:
i. Identify alternative pipeline routes and corresponding water storage locations,
ii. Identify the possible issues during construction and operation of pipelining potable and recycled water and identify strategies to mitigate these
issues/impacts. Consider the following:
iii. Identify environmental impacts that will result from pipelining potable and non-potable water and identify strategies to mitigate these issues/ impacts,
iv. Evaluate alternative pipeline routes and storage locations identified
v. Propose a pipeline route and storage location based on your evaluation of the alternative routes and storage locations
vi. Undertake preliminary sizing of the infrastructure required of your proposed option, and
vii. Undertake an economic analysis to determine the most economical design option.
