BST842 Assignment
Overview:
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly impact the fight against modern slavery globally. From prevention to detection, response, and remedy, AI can support various stages of modern slavery risk management. For this assignment, you are required to explore and critically assess "The Role of AI in Tackling Modern Slavery." This will involve conducting individual research using secondary data sources such as academic papers, modern slavery statements from companies, and reports from trusted organisations like NGOS, the UN, and others.
BST842 Assignment Structure:
Introduction (500 words):
- Provide a very brief overview of modern slavery in the context of supply chains. Introduce the potential of AI as a tool to combat modern slavery and outline what will be covered in your analysis.
Main Body (2000 words):
Analyse the role of AI in the following stages of modern slavery risk management:
- Prevention: How can AI help identify high-risk areas/products, predict vulnerable regions or industries, and assist companies in preventing modern slavery incidence before it occurs?
- Detection: Explore the ways AI can assist in uncovering modern slavery practices in supply chains and in the auditing process.
- Response: Examine how AI can aid companies and organisations in responding to identified modern slavery incidents.
- Remedy: Investigate the role of AI in the remediation of modern slavery cases, including supporting victims.
Support your analysis with examples of industry practices from the secondary data references, and ensure all sources are properly referenced.
Conclusion (500 words):
- Summarise your key findings and offer a critical reflection on the potential and limitations of AI in addressing modern slavery. Discuss any research gaps and propose areas for further investigation.
Assignment Specifications
Your assignment should be 3000 words excluding title page, tables/figures, references, and appendices with a tolerance of %10. Sticking to a strict word limit is an important skill for you to acquire, so make sure that you write in a concise and focused manner. Use size 12 font and 1.5 line spacing, and present in portrait format, not landscape.
You are advised to read widely. As a guide, unless you have read and referenced at least 10 discrete references, it is unlikely that you have done sufficient reading.

All intended learning outcomes are exceeded.
- An excellent piece of work, showing a high degree of mastery of the subject matter, with a well-developed ability to analyse, synthesise and apply knowledge and concepts. All major objectives of the set work are covered, and work is free of all but very minor errors, with a high level of technical competence. There is evidence of critical reflection and of the ability to tackle questions and issues not previously encountered. Ideas are expressed clearly. However, the originality required for an 80+ mark is absent. All intended learning outcomes are achieved, and some are exceeded.
- A good piece of work, showing a sound and thorough grasp of the subject matter, though lacking the breadth and depth required for a distinction mark. A good attempt at analysis, synthesis and application of knowledge and concepts, but more limited in scope than that required for a mark of 70+. Most objectives of the work set are covered. Work is generally technically competent, but there may be a few gaps leading to some errors. Some evidence of critical reflection, and the ability to make a reasonable attempt at tackling questions and issues not previously encountered. Ideas are generally expressed with clarity, with some minor exceptions. All intended learning outcomes are achieved.
- A fair piece of work, showing a grasp of major elements of the subject matter but possibly with some gaps or areas of confusion. Only the basic requirements of the work are covered. The attempt at analysis, synthesis and application of knowledge and concepts is superficial, with a heavy reliance on course materials. Work may contain some errors, and technical competence is at a routine level only. The ability to tackle questions and issues not previously encountered is limited. Little critical reflection. Some confusion and immaturity in the expression of ideas. Most intended learning outcomes are achieved.
- Not of a passable level for a postgraduate programme. A poor piece of work, showing some familiarity with the subject matter, but with major gaps and serious misconceptions. Only some of the basic requirements of the work set are achieved. Little or no attempt at analysis, synthesis or application of knowledge, and a low level of technical competence, with many errors. Difficulty in beginning to address questions and issues not previously encountered.
- Work not of a passable standard, with serious gaps in knowledge of the subject matter, and many areas of confusion. Few or none of the basic requirements of the work set are achieved, and there is an inability to apply knowledge. Technical competence is poor, with many serious errors. The level of expression and structure is very inadequate. Few intended learning outcomes are achieved.
