1.0 INTRODUCTION

Concurrent with the Programme Learning Outcomes (PLO) and Course Learning Objectives (CLO), this assignment is designed to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Understanding and synthesising information gained from the main source of reference.
  2. Critically appraise the information and analyse the key aspects mentioned in the main source of reference with relation to construction project management.
  3. Relate the information to the topic area learnt in class.
  4. Present, as a group, the critical analysis of the task given.
  5. Arrange systematically the content of the presentation in a systematic sequence.

2.0 ASSIGNMENT

2.1 The Task

Group Formation

Form a group of not more than 5 students/group and prepare a written report and presentation and identify the real contractor's company that have an experience in the construction project at the pre- construction phase, and that contractor's company have managed the project at all planning, resource s allocation, and financial forecasting are thoroughly examined before site mobilization.

Group Task

Your task is to carry out a comprehensive case study analysis of the selected Contractor Grade 5 and above (real projects), focusing on how they manage the pre-construction planning and financial readiness, including cash flow forecasting. Your findings should demonstrate how the contractor's strategic planning  process and financial preparation. The outcome of your analysis will serve as a recommendation report to help guide the practitioners in managing risks and optimizing resource utilization.

  • To analyze and evaluate how a construction contractor prepares for a project during the pre-construction phase, with a focus on:
  • Project planning
  • Resources allocation
  • Cash flow forecasting prior to site mobilization

Scope of the Case Study

Your case study should include the following sections:

1. Company Background

2.Project Overview

  • Type of project (e.g., residential, commercial, infrastructure)
  • Project value and estimated duration
  • Contractor's role

3. Planning Stage Activities

Development of a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)

  • Resources planning: labor, materials, equipment

4. Scheduling using tools such as Gantt charts (Master Programmed Only)

5. Cash Flow Management Before Construction

Identification of initial capital investment requirements

  • Monthly cash inflow and outflow forecast including Capital Lock-Up for the construction phase Sources of funding (e.g., client advances, loans, equity)

6. Strategies for managing financial risks or uncertainties before mobilization.

3.0 SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:

Each group is to accomplish the assignment with the final submission consisting of:

3.1 Written report

  • The report shall be in English (PDF file format, 12 points Times New Roman font, 1.5 spacing). Students may include any relevant drawings/plans with the report and should be at least 30 pages (minimum).

The report should be presented in accordance to the tasks that are outlined in 2.1 above.

  • Include a list of references (at least 5) from any relevant books, journals, articles and/or other reading material. To be listed at the end of the report.
  • Strictly NO COPYING AND PASTING directly from the reference source(s). Students must summarise the information/data gathered and produce the report using own words.
  • The report will be assessed by the class lecturer (refer to Table 1)

3.2 Presentation (Live or video)

Each group must present their work at the end of the semester, either live or virtual (subjected to class lecturer's preference).

Presentation or video should be between 10 to 15 minutes long, with good content, professional in outlook, clear audio, creative and engaging.

In the case of recorded presentation, the video should be submitted directly to the class lecturer. 

  • All presentation (live or recorded) is to be assessed by the class lecturer (refer to Table 2)

3.3 Deadlines

4.0 MARKING SCHEME

Note:

The total marks attained for this assignment shall be converted to 40% of the overall subject marks. Refer to the table below for marking criteria for this assignment.

The marks allocated for the written report will make up 30% of the overall assignment and the remaining 10% will be from the presentation (see table above).

4.1 Written Report Marking Scheme

The allocation of marks for the final report is shown in Table 1.

5.0 PLAGIARISM & REFERENCING

Each report needs to cite at least five (5) references. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any evidence of plagiarised work, the report will automatically be assessed based on a full mark of 50% (instead of 100%)- Similarly, copied work will be based on a full mark of 50% and the achieved marks will be divided by the number of groups that copy from each other.
