1. Purpose of the Assessment

To assess understanding of key principles and theories in Cross Cultural Management and the ability of the students to critically evaluate and apply these principles and theories to a contemporary business and management issues.

2. Assessment Task

2.1 AS1 Written assignment (2000 words) weighting 50% of the mark (LO3)

Task:

You are part of a consultancy team advising an international organization on how to improve the performance of its multicultural project teams. Write a report that critically analyses the challenges and success factors of working in multicultural teams from (Brazil, Norway, Spain, Nigeria, and Germany), with specific focus on:

  • Cross-cultural communication styles
  • Problem-solving across cultures
  • Negotiation strategies
  • Conflict management
  • Cultural awareness and unconscious bias

You must:

  • Apply at least three theoretical frameworks or models (e.g. Hofstede, Hall) to underpin your analysis.
  • Use reliable and valid academic resources to evidence your argument/analysis. 
  • Make recommendations for improving multicultural team effectiveness in a business context.

  • Your Report should be 2,000 words (+10%) 
  • Formatted to a high degree, suitable to present to Senior Management
  • Clear adherence to the instructions and requirements.

  • You must properly reference sources that you have used. 
  • You must provide a conclusion and recommendations.
  • For each section of your report discuss, in an evaluative manner, the concepts and analytical frameworks as well as any issue explored using the appropriate academic literature and other literature sources.

The report is expected to cover the following main areas:

-An Executive Summary: this includes the main key issues and main findings you need to shed a light on and the most important outcomes of your analysis/evaluation. 
-An introduction to the report, including background information of your study organisation, purpose and scope of the report (including structure).
-Analysis and findings (Objective wise Findings/ Derived themes from the review
-Conclusion and recommendations. 
-References list (bibliography).

Word Limit: The assessment should be limited to 2,000 words (+/- 10%). If the word count is more than 2,200 words or less than 1,800 words you must revise the text judiciously to deliver work within the stated limits.

Style requirements: except for the titles and subtitles, you should not highlight text, which must be in Arial size 11, without indentations. The main title should be highlighted in font size 16, and the subtitles highlighted in size 14. The margins should be justified, not aligned to the left. Additionally, the space between lines should be single and the space between paragraphs should be double. The work must be submitted in report form and not essay form requiring an Introduction, the main body with subtitles and a conclusion.

Part A – Cultural Influences on Business Practices (LO1)

Critically evaluate how national and regional cultural values influence the organisation’s operations across borders. Focus may include:

  • Decision-making approaches shaped by cultural norms

  • Attitudes toward time, uncertainty, or hierarchy (e.g. high/low context)

Support your evaluation with relevant cultural frameworks (e.g. ,While Lewis, CAGE, Hofstede, Hall, Trompenaars, Schwartz).

  • Managing diverse expectations in cross-border teams
  • Cultural misunderstandings and conflict potential

It is expected that the Reference List of the report will contain at least fifteen sources. As a MINIMUM the Reference List should include three refereed academic journals and five academic books.

Total marks: 100

AS2 Written assignment (2000 words) weighting 50% of the mark (LO1-LO2)

Marks be awarded as follows:

The extent of wider reading on the topic, with relevant and contemporary references, research, examples and discussion. (20/100)

Use of theory, analytical framework and literature (25/100)
Ability to critically evaluate and analyse information (25/100)
The quality of academic discussion and application to the content. (20/100)
Clarity (structure), Visual presentation and the use of a correct referencing format and sources (10/100)
Total marks: 100

Highest marks will be granted to those who offer well-referenced arguments wherever appropriate. Basic response to these details with reference will pass, and efforts in between will receive average marks.

5. Assessment Submission

Your assignment must be word processed and presented in a report format with simple sub-headings. The word count should be as specified in the assignment above±10%. Tables, diagrams, the reference list at the end and appendices are excluded from the count.  

The Assignment report should have a front sheet showing your name, your student number, the module name, the module number, the assignment title, the module tutor's name, the date and the actual word count of your submission.  
All assignments will be submitted, graded and fed-back electronically via TURNITIN. Several submissions will be permitted before the final hand-in date to enable you to refine the content your report.

To submit your work, please go to the ‘Submit your work’ area of the Module Moodle site. It is important that you submit your work to the correct module Moodle site, and that your work is submitted on time.

Feedback on assignments in general will be provided to the whole group when marked assignments are returned. Feedback on assignments for everyone will be provided electronically via TURNITIN.

A student may obtain an individual appointment to discuss feedback with the tutor.
