ARCH3065S Important Information:

Late submission of coursework policy: Late submissions will be processed in accordance with current University regulations which state: 

"Any work submitted within 24 hours after the deadline will be capped at 40% in accordance with DMU academic regulations. Submissions beyond this timeframe will receive a mark of 0%.

These regulations apply to a student's first attempt at coursework. Work submitted late without authorization which constitutes reassessment of a previously failed piece of coursework will always receive a mark of 0%.

ARCH3065S Brief overview of the module

This module provides the opportunity for students to learn/ and appropriate research skills knowledge in relation to technology and environment and the profession. The module will develop student's skills in problem solving and innovative thinking associated with the built environment and sustainability issues in the national and global context.

As a 15-credit module, it has been devised around an estimated 150 hours of study (including timetable activities).

Learning Outcomes

1. Appreciate the social, economic and environmental context for the area of quantity surveying and construction.
2. Ability to analyse and synthesise technological and environmental issues related to the built environment.
3. Ability to evaluate relevant theories and information with reference to quantity surveying and construction practice.
4. Ability to apply strategies of selection for dealing with information.
5. Ability to manage sustained independent enquiry in tacking specific quantity surveying and construction related current problems.
6. Ability to produce a presentation to professional standard using visual and verbal means.

Task 1 Digital Poster Development

Create an A2-sized digital poster for the selected innovation type from Table 01. The digital poster should include the following content:

• Title of the selected innovation type

• Reasons why the selected innovation type is considered a Green Business Model (GBM)
• Analysis of GBM elements relevant to the selected innovation

• References

Task 02 - Report Writing (2200 Words)

Write a report on the selected innovation type from Table 01, analyzing it using GBM Theory. The report should include the following sections:

• Justification for the selected innovation type from Table 01
• Critical analysis of the selected innovation type using the five elements of GBM
• Challenges associated with the application of the innovation type
• Suggestions to overcome the identified challenges with the application of the innovation type
  New insights into the application of the innovation type
• Conclusion

Case Scenario

We are living in a period of environmental breakdown: a climate emergency, mass biodiversity loss, pollution, extinction, the over-utilisation of natural resources and a global waste crisis.

Worldwide, buildings are responsible for around 40% of energy and process-related CO2 emissions, 50% of all extracted materials, 33% of water consumption and 35% of generated waste. Other environmental impacts include resource depletion; air, water and land pollution and biodiversity loss.
