Case Study 1: Construction

Gym on level 1

The number of students and staff at AIC has been continuously increasing. This growth has made possible some of the projects previously considered impractical. One of these projects is the retrofit and redevelop Level 1 within the OP AIC building at 350 Queen Street to fit a Gym and Fitness Centre.

You are contracted to write the project documents for the internal redevelopment of these two levels. The purpose of the project is to provide a dedicated space for physical activity and the promotion of staff and student wellbeing. The facility must serve as a living example of sustainable interior construction and operational design.

The requirements are as follows

Create a number of flexible spaces to accommodate different types of gym activities. Be creative about it. Think what would be good to have for the campus and how you can use the space effectively.
Plan for changing rooms and showers.
You can move any of the facilities that you need to other floors. You can use parts of level 2, 3 and 6 to accommodate them.
The design needs to be made in association with Tengata Whenua.

Case Study 2: IT

App to support physical wellbeing on campus

The new gym in AIC has been quite successful with a lot of students and staff. This has made possible some of the projects previously considered impractical. One of these projects is the creation of an app that helps the students and staff get the most out of their time in the campus gym.

You are contracted to write the project documents for the development of this application. The purpose of this software is to help students and staff with their training plans and routines, measure their physical activity and personalise health advice engaging AI analysis of the user data.

The requirements are as follows:

  • The application must be compatible with multiple devices, including smartphones and tablets operating on both Android and iOS systems.
  • The application must allow users to input or track various data points relating to their training, lifestyle, dietary habits, and other.
  • The data must be used to provide personalised advice to the users using AI analytics.
  • Provide a reasonable level of safety checks to ensure that the AI analysis is accurate and incorporate the principles of data sovereignty.

Case Study 3: Event

Business incubator and competition

The number of students in AIC has been growing. This has made possible some of the projects previously considered impractical. One of these projects is the business incubator and entrepreneurial competition that is both waste-free and carbon-neutral, aligning with the institution’s strategic commitment to sustainability and cultural inclusiveness.

You are contracted to write the project documents for the planning and delivery of this entrepreneurial competition, which marks the opening of the business incubator and is intended to provide the first projects for the incubator. The event must bring together entrepreneurial projects to be judged by a panel of business leaders.

The requirements are as follows:

  • The competition is supposed to run over 5 days with workshops in the first 2 days, submissions and initial screening of startup ideas in the next 2 days, and the panel of business leaders selecting winners from the shortlist on day 5.
  • The event must be designed and executed with a strict waste-free policy. All catering, decorations, packaging, and promotional materials must be either reusable, compostable, or recyclable, and the use of single-use plastics must be entirely eliminated.
  • The event must be planned and delivered in collaboration with Tangata Whenua. This includes starting it with a pōwhiri and finishing it with a poroporoaki, having karakia in the workshops, Māori visual motifs, bilingual signage, and opportunities for Māori cultural expression throughout the event programme.
  • You also need to include travel and hotel plans for any panel judges who are travelling from outside of Auckland
