7HW168 SEM1 Assessment Brief 24/25

This assessment represents 50% of the overall module mark and will assess learning outcomes 1,3, and 4 of the module.

  • LO1 Analyse the threat of communicable and non-communicable diseases in local, national and international populations.
  • LO2 Identify health improvement strategies and techniques which relate to theories of health promotion and behavioural change to improve health and well-being in a given population.
  • LO3 Apply a health promotion and protection approach to the selected communicable or non-communicable disease.
  • LO4 Propose resolutions to improve chosen communicable or non-communicable disease through health protection and promotion strategies.

The assessment is based on a PowerPoint presentation (Must be referenced)

Your intervention should focus on these tasks;

1. Critically present the threat of non-communicable disease 

2. Present the selected theory/model used in implementing the health promotion approach

3. Apply the selected health promotion and protection approach to behaviour change intervention for the disease selected

4. Propose a resolution for tackling that problem that will protect and improve the health of an identified population.

Plan a public health intervention using behaviour change based on an education approach. 

Plan on the PowerPoint 

  • Briefly explain the importance of health protection and improvement
  • Describe communicable and non-communicable diseases

Select one disease (non-communicable disease). Explain rationale for selecting the disease (burden of the disease-International, national and local data)

Which behaviour will your intervention address (Ensure to have evidence of how this behaviour impacts the disease selected)

Theories and models

  • Explain the theories/models, and the importance of them (strengths and weaknesses). Which one did you select and why? 
  • List all aspects of the model
  • How would it inform your campaign? (Remember to focus on only one aspect of the theory/model.)

Approach

  • Discuss the selected approach (Behaviour change using education)
  • Strengths and limitations

The message

Present the educational message you will share with people on the selected health issue (Remember, your message should be informed by the model)
Your message should aim to educate on a behaviour to be changed

Methodology 

  • What strategies would you adopt to reach the optimal number of people?
  • Identify the government/policy to improve the intervention
  • How would you assess the effectiveness of the intervention? (Remember to explain how the evaluation result will be used to inform future implementation of the intervention)

Recommendation

  • How can this disease condition be improved based on your campaign plan
  • How would you improve your next campaign
  • Other approaches that can improve the disease condition.   

Conclusion 

  • Summarise the importance of your proposed campaign in the selected community

Reference

  • Remember to be evidence-based; the information provided has to be referenced appropriately. 

The slides should be presented in PowerPoint with camera and audio capture for markers to assess submissions. Ensure to check the technology before recording your presentation.

Oral presentation: 10 minutes

Slides: 8 slides excluding title and reference list slides. 

The pass rate for level 7 is 50%. Your work will be marked according to the level 7 grade descriptors and on your ability to;

  • Demonstrate that you have met the module learning outcomes
  • Demonstrate that you understand complex public health issues
  • Critique health promotion theories and models in the context of their application to communicable and non-communicable disease
  • Use research evidence to support your work and have a full reference list

  • The concepts and terms discussed in the paper should be well defined with appropriate reference to the literature as well as students’ understanding.
  • There should be a balance between theoretical presentation of the topic (i.e. drawing on the necessary theoretical perspectives) and practical implications for health (i.e. providing specific and practical examples);
  • A range of literature sources providing contrasting and/or contradictory opinions should be provided, correctly referenced and discussed within the context of the paper (only cited items should be included on the reference list).
  • The references should include academic books and textbooks, peer-reviewed publications from academic journals, and reports by national and international organisations.
  • Limit the use of internet sources; when internet sources are used, these should be reliable and evidence-based sources and correctly referenced  with the website address and date (NOTE: web links alone are not acceptable)
