Within these assessments maintaining confidentiality of patients and organisations is extremely important with regards to ethics.

Written task plus Educational tool

Firstly, you will be required to individually write an essay (Word limit 4000 words) in which you select and justify either a structured exercise intervention or a physical activity intervention for a specific condition or pathology. For example you may choose to write about exercise for fatigue, pain management, self-management of long term conditions or for the management of mental health conditions. Or you could either choose a particular patient group such as falls in the elderly or for specific pathologies. The essay will need to include your reflections on the strengths and limitations of your chosen educational tool when provided for your chosen population.

Your marker will need to be able to see that you have understood the content delivered within the module including:

  • Theories of exercise and physical activity prescription.
  • A balanced discussion of evidence for the effects of exercise or physical activity when applied in your chosen population.
  • Barriers and challenges to performing exercise or physical activity faced by your chosen population.
  • Appropriateness of an educational tool designed for your chosen pathology.

Please familiarise yourself with the university guidance on word counts for written assignments. The 4000 words are inclusive of ALL text including citations, tables, text boxes, quotes and titles of diagrams/figures if outside the diagram. The content of diagrams and figures (words inside these) are exempt from Word’s word count if constructed in Word or inserted as a picture.

Secondly you will be required to produce the educational tool which will need to be specifically targeted to your chosen audience. The tool will need to reflect the discussion you have

presented in your main assignment. The audience can be any group that you choose, so for example you might direct the tool at service users themselves or at health care professionals who work with them. There is no fixed format because you will need to consider which format will be the most appropriate for the audience that you have chosen. Examples are things like web pages, leaflets or video presentations/ podcast.
There will be an in-module retrieval attempt available for this assignment.

To develop the summative assessment, you should engage with the University Grade Descriptor (see Assessment tab on Blackboard), where you will see the expectations for the different range of marks that will inform your work and other supporting documents. THE UGD3 information should be used alongside engagement with areas such as;

  • assessment brief, which will clearly detail the assessment task
  • learning material
  • learning outcomes for the module (these will be reflected in the task)
  • previous feedback from previous formative/summative assessment
  • study skills

This assignment should be 4000 words in length. This word limit relates to the word count given by the word count tool in Microsoft Word and should be included on the front cover page.

Work that is >10% over the word limit will be penalised by 2 grades (approximately 10%).

Note that all text (including tables) is included in the word count, from the point of the initial introduction which means the initial title page and contents list are not included. At the end, the list of references is also not included.
You can make use of appendices (also not included in the word count) but these should be used appropriately and not used simply as a means of managing the word limit (your supervisor can provide further guidance).

Educational tool

The tool’s word count will not be included in the 4000 word count for the written task.
If you are producing a leaflet it should be limited to 1000 words. Educational tool presentations should be no longer than 15 minutes.

Formative Feedback

Presentation of your proposed educational tool and feedback on your proposed exercise strategy for you chosen population.

The formative tasks are designed to facilitate the development of the skills that you will require in order to meet the pass level criteria for the summative assessment. Within the module there will be two key formative activities.

Formative 1

You will be asked to present your idea for your chosen population and educational tool to your module tutor. This should include justification for the content and justification of its format. You will have a 10 minute real time online presentation with your module tutor who then will give you verbal feedback.

Formative 2

There will be an opportunity for you to create a written piece based on the evidence and theory around your suggested exercise approach. This should be aimed at content relevant to addressing Learning outcome 2. This should be up to 500 words. You will be allocated a support tutor for this and will receive written feedback in the form on annotations on your submission. There will only be one opportunity to receive this feedback. There will not be an opportunity to receive feedback  on multiple submissions of draft work. The feedback for both tasks should inform what you need to do in order to meet the pass level criteria for the summative assessment,

Marking

Your assignment will be marked using the University Grade descriptor (UGD). The UGD marking grid (see extract below), can be found in the Assessment Tab, this explains the expectations for the marking bands to support you in developing your summative assessment.

Your results will be published with both the 0-16 and text eg. 11 (Mid 2:1). The conversion between 0-16 and the category etc, can be found in the UGD marking grid (as seen above).

Feedback arrangements:

You can expect to receive feedback within 15 working days of the submission date, taking into account any bank holidays and university holidays. The grade will be indicated on grade centre.
Your written work will be annotated with comments that your marker has made, and you will also receive feedback and feedforward comments.

If there are any aspects of your feedback that you do not understand then you can contact your marker for clarification.

All marks and feedback are internally moderated and a sample is seen by the external examiner.

If you require the reassessment attempt

You will be able to arrange a one to one tutorial with your marker in order to gain further clarification of the modifications that you need to do to your work in order to reach the required standard.

Support arrangements:

You can obtain support for this assessment in a number of ways:

1. By attending the introduction and assessment guidance
session at the beginning of the module.
2.By using supervision sessions to seek advice from your supervisor for any aspects related to the specifics of your assignment.
3.By attending skills workshops provided by library services (details on My Hallam).
4.By using the assessment Padlet on the module Blackboard site.

Reassessment:

The minimum pass mark for this module is a grade 7.
If you achieve a grade 6, you will be entitled to submit an IMR attempt for the task.

If you do not achieve the minimum pass criteria (grade 7) following your first submission or IMR, you are entitled to a referral at the end of the module.

If you are referred, you will be given one final attempt at the relevant task. The date for this submission will become available, under the re-assessment tab on BB, after the assessment board has ratified the mark.
The maximum overall mark you can be awarded in a referred assessment task that you pass is a grade 7.

Resubmission will be a rework of your existing work.
