Assessment Title | Structural Design Report: Design of 4 Story Residential Building |
Academic Year | 2025 |
This guideline outlines the coursework requirements for the Structural Design Report for a 4-story Residential Building. The design project provides students with an opportunity to apply their engineering knowledge and skills to a practical scenario.
The coursework assesses the following learning outcomes:
1. Conduct a critical analysis of complex design processes, considering structural elements with various materials and environmental conditions.
2. Design advanced structural elements ensuring safety, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability following current codes of practice.
3. Implement risk management to identify, assess, and mitigate risks in projects, considering uncertainties.
4. Apply knowledge of risk issues to engineering design and evaluate existing risk management practices.
5. Understand the impact of material and structural system choices on project time, cost, and make informed decisions.
6. Demonstrate initiative, personal responsibility, leadership skills in a design team, and evaluate teamwork effectiveness.
Students, working in groups of 4, will undertake a comprehensive structural design project based on a 4-story Building. Refer to the Project Client Brief on Canvas for detailed information.
The submission (all of the Sections above) must not exceed 60 single-sided A4 pages and three A3-size drawings.
Each student needs to complete the Buddy Checker on Canvas, providing comments on the given questions and peer assessment feedback. In addition, each student should write 300 words to critically reflect on the design group project process, providing references and things that can be improved in working within the team.
Note:
The final marks of the group submission for each student may vary if the peer assessment shows that there has been unequal contribution to the group. Unequal in either quantity or quality of work, and/or contribution to the group dynamics.
Detailed Verbal Descriptors, percentage marks, and attainment of learning outcomes are outlined.
A list of relevant resources and references is provided for further study.
