5X7V0027 Tourism and Hospitality Futures Assessment Brief 2024-25

Key task and word count (or equivalent):

For this assignment, critically discuss the three key current consumer trends that you consider are most critical for the international tourism and/or hospitality sectors. Then with a particular focus on Manchester as an international destination, report on how the destination’s traditional and innovative product offerings are influenced by these consumer trends and critique if they can be leveraged to attract a particular international market of your choice.  

You will complete an ‘Introduction to Vlogging’ course (10%) and produce a 10 minute Vlog (90%) to respond to this task.

Module Learning Outcomes:

1.Analyse consumer trends in the international tourism and hospitality industries
2.Evaluate the traditional and innovative product offers of the tourism and hospitality sectors 
3.Critically analyse consumer and sector trends at a fieldwork destination

This assessment will contribute to the achievement of the following Programme Learning Outcomes:

2.Critically discuss the global and/or international context 

5X7V0027 Assignment Details and Instructions

You are asked to produce an individual assignment where you will complete an ‘Introduction to vlogging’ online course via Rise and produce a 10-minute Vlog with a fully referenced script. 

Focus of the creative piece:

The creative piece is an informed critical commentary. In responding to the key task, ensure you cover the following areas when providing your answer in the format of a Vlog. 

1.Determine the three key current consumer trends that you consider are driving and affecting international tourism and/or hospitality sectors 
2.Explain if and how these consumer trends influence how stakeholders in the destination of Manchester provide traditional and innovative product(s) 
3.Then from a perspective of a chosen international market (possibly based on your nationality/country of origin) suggest how the tourism and hospitality stakeholders in Manchester can act to ensure these key consumer trends and the needs of this market are being met 

How to get started and the sequential steps to successful submission: 

1.Undertake the Rise, ‘introduction to vlogging’ course – ensure you keep the evidence of course completion as this has to be provided as part of your final submission
2.Write a referenced informed script that responds to the assessment task, and three areas above
3.Create a video that will visualise/highlight the elements in the script and ensure you apply the principles learnt in the Rise course 
4.Then bring the video and script together to make a vlog 

Key tips:

  • Please ensure you focus on consumer trends, as covered on Moodle and teaching sessions – i.e. you are not asked to focus on travel flows
  • You need to support your judgements by referring to consumer trends and then your knowledge of Manchester as a destination. Please look at Marketing Manchester website and the strategies of Manchester City Council (this will be covered in the lectures also)
  • Once you have completed the Rise course use that learning to make your vlog even better 

There are three components to the submission to Moodle: 

1.A word document with two parts: 
a.a fully referenced script for the vlog 
b.the email confirmation that you have successfully completed the Rise short course: introduction to vlogging. 
2.An uploaded video which has you narrating the script  – ie a vlog

In marking this assessment, the marking rubric below will be applied, and all aspects of the module learning outcomes and professional skills (PLOs) will be evident.

Vlog course and quality of Vlog: 

  • Completion of RISE short course for vlogging will be awarded 10% -if no evidence provided of completion 0% will be given. 
  • Successful submission of a vlog (as per marking rubric below and worth 90%)

The submitted vlog and script will be marked out of 90% in accordance with the marking rubric below.
