2G5Z0046 Task Details and Instructions

Students will complete a three-part essay that demonstrates their understanding of research processes and the use of research within an integrated health and social care context.

To meet the learning outcomes:

Students will locate relevant literature on a topic of their choice that is relevant to integrated health and social care. They will then find one quantitative research paper and one qualitative research paper to explore and compare the role of different research approaches in the context of health and social care.

Part 1.

The first part of the essay will discuss relevant social science theories and/or concepts that are relevant to the topic they have chosen, and students will demonstrate an understanding of the topic using relevant literature. Suggested word count: 500 words.

Part 2.

The second part of the essay will examine and compare the two articles from a research perspective, exploring the different research processes such as the type of research approach, the research methods used, ethical considerations and the research sample to demonstrate their understanding of different research approaches and the kind of knowledge that they can glean within integrated health and social care. Suggested word count 1500 (750 on each paper)

Part 3.

The third part of the essay will consider the potential of both research studies to impact health and social care, and the student will critique the research with consideration to its limitations. Suggested word count: 1000 words.

Students will be supported to do this assessment by providing an accessible and clear briefing and an assessment planning template. They will be supported to select their two research papers at a relevant point during the unit. Students will be provided with examples of the types of research papers that they could select for their studies, and we will work through topics relevant to the assessment throughout the course, explaining research approaches and processes in integrated health and social care. Students will be encouraged to select a topic they are interested in and may pursue in the L6 dissertation unit.

Essays will be expected to be 3000 words. A suggested word count for each section of the essay.

Direct support will be provided via these channels:

Through Moodle: A wide variety of resources will be provided via Moodle, including an accessible assessment guide and tips for developing the assessment. There will be a reading list provided.

Within class activities: A wide variety of approaches will be used in order to encourage and involve you, for example: small group discussion-based activities; viewing and discussing research papers; video/podcast; weekly debrief sessions for each topic and key tasks that we are covering. The assessments will be embedded throughout the course of each week, so attendance is essential.

DELTA sessions: You will be working
ing independently in these sessions, facilitated by various digital resources and online tasks, for example, reading and analysing online academic materials; viewing podcast and DVD extracts; reviewing relevant empirical evidence for case analysis. The assessments will be built throughout the course of each week, so engagement is essential.

Academic skills workshops: You will be given support and advice about researching and planning your assessments, as well as developing your academic skills in critical thinking and evidence synthesis in the workshops.
