MSM7043 Task/Assessment Brief:

Due to the ever changing and diversifying world of work both nationally and internationally, entrants into the job market need to have the appropriate skills and knowledge and qualifications for their chosen field of study and work. But more importantly, some might argue, entrants need the knowledge and skills and tools to access a specific marketplace. You need to know how to identify what job/career you want, how to access the job market, how to ‘sell yourself’ and what you have to offer potential employers.

What is your U.S.P.?

How do you develop new or additional skills or knowledge to further enhance yourself along your chosen career path?

Using both static and interactive tools and skills, this assessment will provide you with the necessary self-awareness and knowledge to pursue and succeed in your chosen career. To capture the progress that you have made during your “employability” journey, you are required to create a portfolio which includes evidence to prove that you have the capabilities to secure a professional job. You need to showcase and evidence all the employability areas that we have focused on.

The portfolio needs to include the following:

1. Evidence of you having completed the following seven Careers e-Lessons (on Moodle). When you complete each e-Lesson, you will be issued with a ‘certificate of completion’. You must include this certificate as evidence of your completion of each e-Lesson within your portfolio. You also need to reflect on what you have learned from each lesson, and how it will benefit you (1200 words).

  • Plan your future
  • Get valuable experience
  • Networking and social media
  • Perfect your CV and covering letter
  • Find your graduate job
  • Write a winning application form
  • Shine at interviews and assessment centres
Evidence of the full certificates can be provided in the format of screenshot. Please ensure all seven certificates are included as evidence.

2. Your career plan: after completing the ‘Plan your future’ Careers e-Lesson, you should have gained more insight into how to make well-informed career plans. You are required to use the “Career Development Plan and Goal Setting” worksheet to help you to form a detailed step-by-step SMART career plan with specific objectives aiming for a professional graduate job (200 words). You need to provide the completed “Career Development Plan and Goal Setting” worksheet as evidence.

3. “Shape Your Future” personal employability skills with rationale on the skills that you need to develop (300 words). You need to complete the “Shape Your Future” survey to identify your current skill set firstly before writing your rationale for improving certain skills for your dream job. Survey results (with your name) need to be provided as evidence.

4. Provide links, websites and/or other platforms where you searched for your dream jobs. Links need to be provided for actual jobs that you searched. Screenshot of these jobs should be provided. You also need to discuss the skills you need to develop and the experiences you need to obtain in order to maximise your chances of securing that dream job (100 words).

5. Your CV and covering letter presented in an appropriate format and style for the roles you will be applying for. CV - a maximum of two pages. Covering letter - a maximum of one page. Evidence of progress made from your original CV. For example, you can screenshot your ‘before’ and ‘after’ version of your CV. You need to explain what changes you have made, what you have learned, and how the new CV will benefit you (200 words).

6. A Living CV: This is a short video profile/CV. You should submit a recorded video (3-5 minutes long) to showcase yourself to a potential employer. You should identify what is your Unique Selling Point (USP) and why you are the right person for the job. You need to create a link to it and embed it in the document for this task. A script of your video should be provided. However, please avoid reading script in the video. (500 words equivalent) Guide for video CV.

7. Online profile: Develop a Professional online profile using LinkedIn. Provide a link to your LinkedIn profile. Invite your programme director, career consultant, and lecturers to add them to your network (if they accept your invitation!). Demonstrate the development of your LinkedIn profile. You need to provide the screenshots of the ‘before’ and ‘after’ version of your LinkedIn profile in full as evidence. You also need to explain what changes you have made, what you have learned, and how actively using LinkedIn will benefit you (200 words).

8. Evidence of an application form that you have completed for a post that you ideally would like to have after graduation. You need to provide a screenshot of the actual job advert. You need to showcase your skills and experience in the application form with evidence. Guide for online application.

9. Include the link of the recording and the full report of your online recorded interview, using Shortlist.me, the video interviewing platform. Access Cardiff Met video interview practice platform where you can access dozens of automated question sets. Guide for video/online interviews. You are required to reflect on your interview experience considering the following questions: What went well? What could be improved? What will you do differently next time? (200 words).

10. Evidence of at least one of the following activities.

  • Attendance of a Careers insight talk or industry forum to learn more about careers in a wide range of sectors and industries. Access via ‘Events’ on MetHub
  • Attendance at a Careers Fair to meet prospective employers and discuss potential opportunities available. Access via ‘Events’ on MetHub
  • Attendance of a wide variety of Careers events to enhance your industry knowledge, meet professionals and expand your network. Access via ‘Events’ on MetHub.
  • Attend a Careers ‘Drop-in’ session with a member of the Careers team to discuss your ideas and explore your options for your future career. ‘Drop-in’ sessions take place every Tuesday and Thursday, during term-time, 10am-12pm, at the i-Zone.

You can take a screenshot of attendance confirmation as evidence or a photo of you attending your chosen activity. You also need to present the outcome of attending your chosen activity, for example, what you gained from this experience (100 words).
